- Markdown is plain text with simple marks, like # for headings and ** for bold.
- John Gruber created it in 2004, with help from Aaron Swartz, so people could write without leaving the keyboard.
- Files usually use the .md extension and convert easily to HTML or PDF.
- There are variants (CommonMark, GitHub Flavored Markdown), so some features change depending on the program.
1What is Markdown and why is it so widely used?
Markdown is a way of writing formatted text using only keyboard characters. A hash sign at the start of a line marks a heading, two asterisks around a word make it bold, and a hyphen starts a list item. The file is still plain text, so it can be opened in any editor, yet it contains enough information to generate a structured document.
It became popular because it lets you write quickly, without menus or buttons, and because the unconverted text is already readable. Today it is used in software documentation, README files, wikis, blogs, note-taking apps, and editors that export to other formats.
2Who created Markdown and how has it evolved?
John Gruber released Markdown in 2004 in collaboration with Aaron Swartz. The idea was a syntax inspired by the way people already wrote plain-text emails, along with a small Perl program that turned it into HTML. The original description left some cases ambiguous, and each implementation resolved them in its own way.
To bring order to that landscape, CommonMark was born, a more precise specification with conformance tests. Platforms such as GitHub added their own variant, GitHub Flavored Markdown, with tables, task lists, and strikethrough text. In 2016 the text/markdown MIME type was registered in RFC 7763, which formally recognized the format on the internet.
3How do you write in Markdown? Basic syntax
The essential syntax takes only a few minutes to learn. Headings are marked with one or more hash signs depending on their level, italics with one asterisk or underscore on each side, and bold with two. Paragraphs are separated by a blank line, and links are written with square brackets and parentheses.
That covers ninety percent of everyday documents. Tables, footnotes, and task lists depend on the variant your program uses, so it is a good idea to check the preview before calling a document finished.
- Headings: # Main title, ## Subtitle, ### Section.
- Emphasis: *italics*, **bold**.
- Lists: a hyphen or a number at the start of each line.
- Code: single backticks inline, or three for a block.
- Quotes: the greater-than sign at the start of the paragraph.
4Markdown vs. TXT, HTML, and Word
Compared with TXT, Markdown adds structure without sacrificing readability: the file is just as portable, but it can be transformed into a document with headings and emphasis. Compared with HTML, it is much shorter and easier to write, though less expressive: it does not control colors, positioning, or fine layout.
Compared with Word or a DOCX, the difference is one of philosophy. Markdown separates content from presentation; you write, and the final look is decided by the stylesheet of whoever converts it. Word mixes both and gives you immediate visual control. If you want to collaborate with tracked changes and comments, Word is more comfortable; if you want to write fast and version changes precisely, Markdown is more practical.
5How to convert a Markdown file to PDF
A .md file is not a document ready to share with someone who does not use the same editor, so the usual approach is to convert it to PDF to send or print it. Many editors offer a direct export to HTML or PDF; others rely on external conversion programs.
Rayo PDF GO accepts Markdown and text files and converts them to PDF with headings, lists, and basic paragraphs through the Office to PDF tool, and everything is processed on your device. Afterward you can fine-tune the result: add page numbers, merge the document with other PDFs, or compress it before sending. Keep in mind that the advanced features of each variant, such as certain tables, may not be reproduced the same way.
6Common problems and best practices
The most common problem is that the formatting is not applied. It is usually caused by a missing blank line between blocks, a stray space after the hash sign, or indentation that accidentally turned text into a code block. Checking the editor preview solves almost every case.
As best practices, save in UTF-8 so accented letters and special characters do not get corrupted, keep a single top-level heading per document, write descriptive alt text for images, and store images in a folder next to the file. If you share a final PDF, keep the original .md too: it is the editable source and takes up very little space.
For comfortable writing, choose an editor that shows the preview while you type; that way you quickly find out whether a list or table is not being interpreted the way you expected. And if you work in a team, remember that Markdown works very well with version control systems, because every change is visible line by line, something impossible to follow with a binary file.

Frequently asked questions
What does the .md extension mean?
It stands for Markdown. The .markdown extension is also accepted, although .md is the most common. In both cases the file is plain text that any editor can open.
Is Markdown the same as HTML?
No. Markdown is a simpler syntax that is usually converted to HTML. It covers headings, lists, links, and emphasis, but not the detailed visual control that HTML offers with CSS.
How do I open a .md file?
With any text editor, such as Notepad, TextEdit, or VS Code. If you want to see the formatted result, you need an editor with a Markdown preview, or you can convert the file to PDF or HTML.
Can you add images and tables in Markdown?
Images, yes, using link syntax with an exclamation mark. Tables depend on the variant: basic CommonMark does not define them, but GitHub Flavored Markdown and many editors do support them.
Can I convert a PDF to Markdown?
Not directly or faithfully. You can extract the text from the PDF and restructure it by hand with Markdown marks, but the original layout, tables, and images are not rebuilt automatically.
