  • ODT is the text document format of the open OpenDocument standard, used by LibreOffice Writer.
  • It has been an ISO standard since 2006 and does not depend on any one company.
  • Word can open and save it, although margins, fonts, or tables sometimes change.
  • To share with a guaranteed look, the best option is to export it to PDF.

1What is an ODT file?

ODT stands for OpenDocument Text, the text document format of the open OpenDocument standard. It is the native format of LibreOffice Writer and Apache OpenOffice Writer, the best-known free word processors, and it serves the same purpose as DOCX in Word: storing text with styles, images, tables, headers, notes, and other document elements.

It belongs to a family: ODS for spreadsheets and ODP for presentations. Its main selling point is freedom: anyone can read the specification and implement support without paying licenses, which makes it a frequent choice in government agencies, schools, and organizations that prefer not to depend on a single vendor.

2History and standard: from OpenOffice to the ISO standard

The format was born in the OpenOffice.org project, which developed its own XML-based format in the early 2000s. That work was taken to OASIS, a standards consortium, which approved OpenDocument 1.0 in 2005. In 2006 it was adopted as the international standard ISO/IEC 26300, a milestone that gave it institutional weight.

Since then the standard has had new versions, and competition with Microsoft's OOXML format, the one DOCX uses, pushed both to improve interoperability. Today, Word, LibreOffice, and other programs read and write both formats, although neither does so with absolute fidelity.

3How is an ODT file built on the inside?

An ODT is actually a compressed package in ZIP format. If you change the extension and unzip it, you will find several files: one with the document content, another with the styles, another with the metadata, a settings file, a manifest listing the components, and a folder with the included images. Almost all the text is in readable XML.

This structure has practical advantages. If the file gets damaged, you can sometimes rescue parts of the content by opening the package. And because it is XML, other programs can read or generate it easily. One technical detail is that the file declaring the document type must be stored uncompressed and first in the package, so systems can recognize the type quickly.

4ODT vs. DOCX: which should you use?

Both are modern XML-based formats inside a ZIP, and for a simple text with paragraphs, headings, and images they work equally well. The difference shows up in complex documents: advanced styles, nested tables, fields, uncommon fonts, or macros can behave differently when moving from one format to the other.

The practical rule is to choose the format of the program in which you will keep editing. If you work in LibreOffice, ODT is the most faithful; if your collaborators use Word, DOCX will avoid surprises. In both cases, once the document is finished and only needs to be read, PDF is the safest delivery format.

  • Document you keep editing in LibreOffice: save as ODT.
  • Document edited by people using Word: save as DOCX.
  • Final document to read or print: export to PDF.
  • Long-term archive: consider PDF/A in addition to the original.

5Common problems opening ODT in Word and how to avoid them

Word has opened ODT files for several versions, but the internal conversion can alter the layout: page breaks that shift, tables with a different width, numbered lists that restart, or fonts replaced by similar ones. Almost always the cause is a font that is not installed on the destination computer.

To minimize changes, use common fonts, avoid complex effects, review the document after opening it in the other program, and if it only needs to be read, send a PDF. If you need to embed fonts so the document looks the same, do it from your word processor's PDF export option, which can include them inside the file.

6How to convert an ODT to PDF and work with it in Rayo PDF GO

The most direct route is to export to PDF from LibreOffice itself, which offers options for quality, image compression, bookmarks, and even PDF/A for archiving. That way the document keeps a stable format. You can also use the Office to PDF tool in Rayo PDF GO, which works on your device without uploading the file to any server.

Once you have the PDF, you can take the next step: merge several documents into one, add page numbers, sign, password-protect, or compress it for email. And if you receive a PDF and need to edit it as text, the PDF to Word tool produces an editable document that you can open and, if you wish, save again as ODT from your word processor.

If you collaborate with people who use different programs, agree on an exchange format from the start and avoid switching between formats several times; each conversion adds small discrepancies. And always keep a copy in the original format you work in, even if you deliver a PDF, because PDF is excellent for reading but awkward to edit again.

Frequently asked questions

What program opens an ODT file?

LibreOffice Writer and Apache OpenOffice open it natively. Microsoft Word and Google Docs also open it, although there may be small formatting changes.

What is the difference between ODT and DOCX?

ODT is the open OpenDocument format, used by LibreOffice; DOCX is the Microsoft Word format. Both store text with styles and images, but each program interprets them with slightly different nuances.

Can I convert an ODT to PDF for free?

Yes. LibreOffice can export it to PDF directly, and there are also tools that do it in your browser or on your device. The resulting PDF keeps the layout on any device.

Why does my ODT change when I open it in Word?

Because Word translates the styles and layout into its own format, and fonts, tables, or page breaks may not match. Installing the same fonts and reviewing the result helps.

Can an ODT have a password?

Yes. LibreOffice lets you save the document encrypted with a password. If you have already exported it to PDF, you can also protect that PDF with a password to open it.
