Tagged PDF: what it is and what it is for
The structure that tells software the reading order of a page.
A tagged PDF includes an internal structure that describes what each part of the page is: heading, paragraph, list, table, image. That structure tells the software in what order to read the content.
It is essential for accessibility: screen readers use the tags to read the document in an understandable way for people with visual disabilities. It also helps reflow the text on small screens.
Not all PDFs are tagged. Those generated from a word processor with the right option usually are; scans and many design exports are not.
