In 30 seconds
- Orientation can be portrait (vertical) or landscape (horizontal); rotating a page turns it in multiples of 90 degrees.
- A PDF can mix portrait and landscape pages without any problem.
- Scans and photos often come out sideways or upside down because of how the sheet was placed or the camera.
- Rotating a page doesn't change its content: it only changes how it is displayed, and you can undo it by rotating the other way.
1What is page orientation?
Orientation describes whether a page is taller than wide, which we call portrait, or wider than tall, which we call landscape. Most letters, contracts and invoices are portrait; wide tables, blueprints, presentations and calendars are usually landscape.
In a PDF, orientation depends on the page size and on the rotation applied to it. Two identical pages can look different if one has a 90-degree rotation stored in the file.
2How does rotation work under the hood?
Rotating a page doesn't redraw its content. The PDF stores a rotation value associated with the page, which can be 0, 90, 180 or 270 degrees, and the viewer applies that rotation when displaying it. That is why rotating is fast, loses no quality and can be reversed at any time without leaving a trace.
This has a practical consequence: a file can contain pages with different orientations, and each one can be rotated separately. It also explains why a page can look right in one viewer and sideways in another, if the second ignores the rotation value.
When you work with many scans, it pays to review the result in thumbnail view, where rotated pages stand out immediately. Sort, rotate what's needed and only then apply other operations like merging, numbering or text recognition, so you don't repeat work.
3Why scans come out sideways
When you scan or photograph documents, the device saves the image as it captures it, and doesn't always know which side is the top. If you place the sheet sideways on the scanner, or your phone was rotated, the result is saved sideways. When merging several scans you can end up with pages facing different directions within the same document.
To put them in order you need to rotate the affected pages. If the problem is a single page, rotate it alone; if the whole file came out sideways, rotate the entire document. Always check the thumbnail view before calling the job done.
- One page sideways: rotate it 90 degrees the right way.
- One page upside down: rotate it 180 degrees.
- Whole scan sideways: apply the same rotation to all pages.
- Rotated photos: fix them before converting to PDF.
4Common problems and how to solve them
A common problem is rotating the page so the text looks right, but the printout comes out cropped, because the paper is still portrait while the page is landscape. In the print dialog, choose automatic orientation or adjust the option to fit the content to the sheet.
Another is that text search finds no words in a rotated scan: if you apply text recognition to an upside-down page, the result is poor. Rotate first, apply OCR afterward. And if a screenshot or photo comes out rotated because of the camera's internal information, fix it in the image before converting it.
5Common mistakes and myths
One mistake is thinking that rotating a page makes it a different size: what changes is how it is displayed, not the content. Another is rotating with the viewer instead of rotating the file: many viewers let you rotate the view, but that rotation isn't saved in the document, and when you open it again it comes back as it was.
Rotating is also confused with flipping. Rotating moves the page in 90-degree steps; a mirror, which swaps left and right, is a different operation. And switching from portrait to landscape in a word processor reflows the text, while rotating in the PDF just turns it.
6Rotating pages with Rayo PDF GO
With Rotate PDF you turn specific pages or the whole document in 90-degree steps and download a new file with the rotation saved, without uploading anything to a server. With Organize PDF you can also reorder pages, and with Crop PDF adjust margins after rotating.
For loose photos and screenshots, Rotate image fixes the orientation before using Images to PDF. If you already scanned and the text can't be found, rotate first with Rotate PDF and then use OCR.

Frequently asked questions
How do I rotate a page in a PDF?
Select the page and choose to rotate 90, 180 or 270 degrees with a tool like Rotate PDF, then download the file with the rotation saved.
Does rotating a page reduce quality?
No. Only a rotation value is saved; the content isn't redrawn.
Why does my PDF open sideways in another viewer?
Because the viewer ignores the saved rotation, or because you rotated only the view and not the file.
Can I have portrait and landscape pages in the same PDF?
Yes. Each page has its own size and rotation.
What is the difference between portrait and landscape?
Portrait is taller than wide; landscape is wider than tall.
Should I rotate before applying OCR?
Yes. Text recognition works better with pages in the correct orientation.
