- PPTX is the PowerPoint presentation format since PowerPoint 2007.
- It stores slides, layouts, images, animations, notes and multimedia.
- It is a ZIP package with XML based on Office Open XML.
- To send it without risk of it changing, it is best to export it to PDF.
1What is a PPTX file?
PPTX is the format PowerPoint has used to save presentations since 2007. A file contains a series of slides, and each one combines text, images, shapes, charts, tables, video, audio and animations. It also stores the speaker notes, the transitions and the slide master information that defines the backgrounds, fonts and colors of the whole presentation.
Keynote, LibreOffice Impress and Google Slides can also open it, although animations, special fonts and some effects may look different depending on the program.
2How is a PPTX built inside?
Like the other modern Office formats, a PPTX is a ZIP of XML files. There is one XML per slide, others for the layouts and the master, and folders with the embedded images, audio and video. That organization explains two things: why content can be reused from one slide to another through the master, and why the file size depends almost entirely on the media it contains.
The slide master is the key to the design: it defines the placeholders, the typography and the colors. If you change something in the master, every slide that uses it changes. That is why it is better to edit the master than to touch up slide by slide.
3PPTX, PPT and PPSX: what's the difference?
PPT is the binary format from before 2007. PPTX replaced it; it is lighter and based on an open standard. PPSX is a presentation that opens directly in slideshow mode, without showing the editor; it is useful for delivering a talk that's ready to project, but it isn't convenient for further editing. PPTM is the equivalent with macros.
If you need an editable format, use PPTX. If you need to share a document that looks the same everywhere and can be printed or read on a phone, use PDF.
4PPTX vs. PDF: when should you convert a presentation?
Convert to PDF when you want to hand out the material, upload it to a portal or print it. The PDF keeps every slide exactly as it looks, without depending on the recipient having your fonts or the same program version. It loses the animations, videos and transitions, which have no equivalent on a fixed page.
With “Office to PDF” in Rayo PDF GO you can generate the PDF on your device. Afterward, if the file ends up large because of the images, “Compress PDF” reduces the size, and if you need only some slides, “Split PDF” extracts the ones you want.
5Common problems with PPTX presentations
The first is size: uncompressed photos, embedded videos and audio make it easy for a presentation to exceed email limits. Others are fonts that aren't on the computer where it's projected, videos that won't play because of broken links, and animations that behave differently in another program.
Practical fixes: use common fonts or embed them, compress the images in PowerPoint itself or with “Compress image” before inserting them, link large videos instead of embedding them, and always carry a backup PDF copy in case the room's computer doesn't open your file the way you expect.
6Design, size and privacy tips
Slides work best with little text, good contrast and images at the size you need: a photo 4,000 pixels wide on a slide that will be shown at 1,920 pixels is useless weight. Resize before inserting, and save images as JPG if they are photos or PNG if they have text or transparency.
Before sharing, check the speaker notes, comments and author details, which travel inside the file. If you send a PDF, those notes don't appear unless you export them. And remember that Rayo PDF GO processes files on your device, which avoids uploading confidential presentations to an outside server.
If you present on someone else's computer, always bring both the PPTX and the PDF on a USB drive or in your cloud, and open both before you start. A PDF doesn't animate, but it never breaks its layout, and it can save a talk when the room's computer has a different version of the program.
7How to get the most out of PPTX in Rayo PDF GO
Prepare the presentation with images at the right size, convert it with “Office to PDF,” and check that each slide lands on one page. If you need to deliver only part of it, “Split PDF” extracts the chosen slides and “Delete pages” removes the ones that shouldn't go out. For a printed summary, you can also add “Page numbers.”
If you received a PDF of a talk and want to reuse its images, “PDF to images” exports each page as JPG or PNG so you can place them in your own presentation. Keep in mind that animations, videos and transitions don't survive the trip through PDF, so always keep the original PPTX.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a PPTX to PDF?
With “Office to PDF,” or from Save As or Export in your presentation program. Each slide becomes a page; animations and videos are not kept.
Why is my presentation so big?
Almost always because of embedded images and videos. Reduce the photo dimensions, compress them, and link long videos instead of embedding them.
What is the difference between PPTX and PPSX?
PPTX opens the editor; PPSX opens directly in presentation mode, which is useful for projecting but not convenient for editing.
Can I open a PPTX without PowerPoint?
Yes, with Keynote, LibreOffice Impress or Google Slides. The design may vary a little; a PDF is the most reliable way to see the result.
Can a PDF be converted to PPTX?
Some programs try, but a PDF doesn't keep the slide structure, so the result usually needs a lot of adjustments. It is better to keep the original.
Are fonts saved inside the PPTX?
Only if you embed them when saving. Otherwise, the computer that opens the file will use a substitute font and the design may change.
